Among the mountains dividing the Hinku and the Hongu valleys is the Mera Peak. The bulk of this peak rises to the south of Everest and dominates the watershed between the wild and heavily wooded valleys. The approach to the peak requires the crossing of some high passes and is a challenging adventure which is rewarded with spectacular scenery and undoubtedly one of the finest viewpoints in Nepal. The trek to the summit is a steady ascent on snow and ice with little technical difficulty. The summit, over 21,000 ft, offers stunning views of Makalu and Kanchenjunga to the east, Everest to the north and in the foreground the Baruntse and Chamlang massifs towering over the Hongu Basin.
We fly to Tumlingtar and after a drop from a ridge the Panch Pokhari is reached. Here five small lakes are clustered together from where beautiful range of mountains is seen. We pass through the Horselha cave and Khara to reach the Mera Base Camp. The return journey follows the main route through Pangoche to Namche Bazaar, and on to the airstrip at Lukla for the flight back to Kathmandu.
